The grandfather built. The father held. And in the third generation someone arrives with a decision that is reasonable on paper and still sets everything sliding.

What the family calls bad luck

When it happens, everyone has an explanation. The family calls it a bad run. The advisers speak of the market, the cycle, a poor year. The person concerned blames themselves and stops sleeping.

All those readings are defensible. The problem is that none of them explains why the same thing already happened once before — in another era, with other money and other people.

How to look

You need no archive and no family tree. Sitting down for one evening with three questions is enough.

• How old were they when it struck? If the grandfather lost something at forty-eight, the father at forty-seven, and you have just turned forty-six, that is not a statistical coincidence: it is a date.
• Which sentence repeats in the family? Almost every family has one. «Money never lasts in this house», «it always ends the same way with partners», «nobody here retires in peace». A sentence said across three generations no longer describes — it orders.
• What is inherited besides the assets? A way of deciding. A mistrust. A loyalty to someone who is no longer there. That travels with the inheritance and appears in no inventory.

What is not a family pattern

Worth saying, because this field invites people to see figures where there are none.

• A badly structured business fails in any family. That is accounting, not inheritance.
• A badly prepared succession creates predictable conflict. A notary solves that — and must solve it before anyone else.
• Two similar events are two events. It takes a third repetition, and above all the same form, not the same content.

Why the third generation

We have no answer that fully convinces us, and we would rather say so. What we have observed for decades is that this is the moment when the person deciding never knew the person who built. They inherit the consequences without having seen the causes — and repeat without knowing they are repeating.

Whoever finds that family sentence and recognises it has already done half the work. The rest can be discussed, if it is needed.
